Studying aggressive clearing behavior of drivers at uncontrolled intersections under mixed traffic conditions

To make such intersections safer, it is essential to understand what prompts drivers to behave aggressively. In this study, a gap acceptance model and an aggressive clearing model have been developed for four-legged uncontrolled intersections. Two such intersections from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh have been chosen for developing the models. Duration of gap, major and minor road vehicle type, speed of major road vehicles and clearing time are the parameters considered in this study which reflects the driver’s clearing behavior. Results have showed that the probability of accepting a gap increases with increase in lag/gap value and decreases with increase in clearing time. The probability also decreases with increase in size of major road vehicle but increases with increase in size of minor road vehicle. The level of aggressiveness of minor road vehicles increases with decrease in lag/gap and speed of major road vehicles, and it decreases with decrease in clearing time and size of minor road vehicles. Thus, the aggressiveness of drivers can be reduced by measures such as minimization of side friction and installation of speed breakers on minor roads to improve the safety of uncontrolled intersections.
